Hey everyone! I know I’m resurrecting a conversation that dates back a couple months, but after collecting all your feedback, trying out a few things in the backend, and plenty of headaches to figure out what we were going to do, we’ve finally made a decision.
I wanted to thank all of you who took the time to read our post and filled out the survey. There was a lot of good information, and I wanted to address some and expand on the conversation.
Key data from the survey
- 83% of you thought renaming to premium would make it easier to understand.
- 99% of you thought merging boosts and superboosts simplified our current system.
The most common feedback
As always, your feedback drives us forwards, and the most mentioned workaround ended up being the one we went for. This was about not making these changes retroactive. We have decided that it is indeed the best course of action, as you’ll read in the conclusion below.
Others wondered about the portability of premium status. This will remain unchanged. You can currently move your boosts around with no restrictions, and that will stay exactly the same.
There were also concerns about Patreon and winners of contests. Patreon users are the OG crew, and we owe them everything. We have gone out of our way to ensure that their early support is rewarded, and that won’t change. Similarly, contest winners won’t be overlooked.
The harder suggestions
In essence, changing the system completely. What came up the most is decoupling premium campaigns from subscription tier. This would mean having a basic subscription, lets say Owlbear, with a certain number of premium campaigns, and having the ability to pay for extra premium campaigns without going up a tier in sub. This makes sense in a lot of ways, but would represent a huge amount of work on our end for implementation.
There were also some more unique suggestions like removing tiers and stacking boosts on campaigns for increasing bonuses. The challenge with some of these suggestions was that we’d have to change too much about the way Kanka works to make it worthwhile.
Moving forwards
We have decided that the best solution is not to change anything for anyone who is currently a subscriber. If you currently have an active subscription, your account will be tagged, and you will keep your current bonuses, within the current system, as long as your subscription remains active. This means that Owlbears will keep 3 boosts, which they can spread out over multiple campaigns to boost them, or use on a single campaign to superboost it. Similarly, Wyverns and Elementals will retain their 6 and 10 boosts. You will obviously also have access to our frequent updates, community votes, etc… Nothing changes.
New and returning subscribers will be on the new system. They will get a certain number of premium (superboosted in the old terminology) campaigns based on subscription level. Our data shows that 87% of Owlbears only boost or superboost a single campaign, so we feel comfortable with going for 1 premium campaign for new Owlbears, 3 for Wyverns, and 7 for Elementals.
These changes will take effect on the 18th of May.
We also want to give any current subscribers the opportunity to migrate to the new system if they choose. This will be a one way switch. I suspect most Owlbears won’t see a need for this, but Wyverns and Elementals might see benefit in the increased amount of premium (superboosted) campaigns. You can migrate to the new system in your account settings.
As mentioned above, we’re also investigating allowing users to buy single premium campaigns independently from their subscription status. We’re nowhere near implementation yet, but it is something we’ve got an eye on.
I want to thank everyone who participated and gave us feedback. It is always nice to see so many of you involved personally, and that makes it easy for us to work extra hard for all of you!
That’s it for this update. As always, thank you to our amazing subscribers who make these frequent updates possible. Come join us and our community on our Discord server!
